Goal: Assess the risk and benefit of fortification and encourage an evidence-based approach to policy decision-making

When developing and implementing food fortification strategies, countries face major challenges, from how to set effective and safe fortification levels to how to choose the most suitable food vehicle for fortification. They often ask why they should prioritize fortification in terms of health and economic impact. With increasing fortification initiatives some countries are also concerned about high vitamin A and iron consumption. Risk-benefit analyses provide answers to these questions. Assessing its anticipated health impact and consequences justifies both mandatory and voluntary fortification.
