Our Mandate
When SIGHT AND LIFE was first established, it was focusing primarily on vitamin A deficiency by supporting vitamin A supplementation projects and research around the globe.
Over the years, our scientific understanding of the interactions of micronutrients on human health has deepended.
The focus has correspondingly evolved to embrace the perspective that micronutrient deficiencies need to be addressed in an integrated and holistic manner.
Thus, more recently, our mandate has expanded to address other nutritional topics of importance and its emphasis shifted from SIGHT to LIFE.
Current focuses of SIGHT AND LIFE are:
Hidden Hunger
A lack or loss in dietary quality that leaves individuals or populations with deficiencies in essential micronutrients which negatively impact on health, cognition, function, survival, and economic potential
Double Burden of Malnutrition
This occurs where countries while dealing with the problems of infectious disease and undernutrition, are at the same time experiencing a rapid upsurge in chronic disease risk factors such as obesity and underweight
Nutritional Anemia
Anemia that results from inadequate intake or assimilation of multiple vitamins and minerals essential for the production of red blood cells and hemoglobin
