Wilma B. Freire (WBF): Latin American countries are facing a double burden of undernutrition and obesity. While undernutrition still affects a large proportion of small children in particular, obesity is affecting people throughout the life cycle. So the real challenge for Latin America is to tackle the two problems simultaneously, because they are interrelated. In general, the levels of undernutrition are still high in the region, although we are observing significant differences within and among countries. On the other hand, the problem of obesity and overweight has emerged fairly recently but is growing rapidly, to the point that it is considered one of the major public health problems in the region.
