Biofortification of staple crops is an emerging strategy to prevent micronutrient deficiencies, primarily among poor, rural populations that are heavily dependent on subsistence farming. Although it will still be several years before biofortification can be widely employed, presenters provided an overview of the concept and updated delegates on progress with two biofortified crops. The session was moderated by Dr Erick Boy of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and Professor Yunbo Luo of the China Agricultural University in Beijing.
