Vitamin A deficiency is a serious public health problem in less developed areas of the world where the population earns a low income and consumes diets low in vitamin A. Chronic intake of foods low in vitamin A and -carotene forming an unbalanced diet with little variety, which leads to micronutrient deficiencies, is common in many populations. The most vulnerable groups affected are pregnant or lactating women and preschool children, with an estimated 250 million at risk of developing vitamin A deficiency disorders (VADD).
