In the Bazar-Korgon and Ak-syi rayons in Jalal-Abad, Project HOPE has been running a fouryear project since 2002 to improve the health of children up to the age of five years and of women of reproductive age. Its aim is to reduce the level of sickness and the mortality rate among women and children. The quality of medical support should be improved and families should be enabled to solve problems concerning their own health. Training is also provided and part of the service includes supplementation with vitamin A. The seminar In the context of these health efforts, it has been possible for the first time to conduct a seminar for health providers (HPs) relating to preventive measures for vitamin A deficiency (VAD), with the help of UNICEF trainer DI Ahmedova and assistant ND Ishniyazov from Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The seminar was made possible by the financial support of Project HOPE, Switzerland, and by SIGHT AND LIFE. The purpose of the seminar was to educate local HP trainers on: • the importance of vitamin A • diagnosing VAD • VAD preventive measures • how to run a supplementation campaign. The 24 participants came from Jalal-Abad and from two pilot regions of Project HOPE: Ak-syi and Bazar-Korgon. In the second part of the seminar 13 trainers were educated, who in turn will train other health providers in VAD preventive measures in future.
