In June 2007, SIGHT AND LIFE generously donated 533,000 capsules of vitamin A to Save the Children’s School Health and Nutrition (SHN) programs in Malawi, Mali, Bangladesh, Philippines, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Haiti and Bolivia. Between June 2006 and September 2007, 369,964 vitamin A capsules were distributed, benefiting over 265,000 children.Although school-age children are not at a high risk of mortality, they do suffer from a high burden of disease and micronutrient deficiencies, which affect their ability to attend school and learn to their full potential. Vitamin A deficiency is estimated to affect around 85 million school-age children,1 impairing their immune function and increasing their risk of infections and blindness.
