adolescents with vitamin A deficiency

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a major public health nutrition problem in the developing world. In the regions of Latin America and the Caribbean VAD is mostly subclinical. It especially affects young children, among whom the deficiency can cause xerophtalmia and lead to blindness, limit growth, weaken innate and acquired host defenses, and exacerbate infection and the risk of death. It is also becoming clear that VAD can extend through school-age and adolescent years into adulthood. However, the health consequences of VAD have not been completely defined.
