Martin Frigg grew up as the second youngest of five brothers in Präz on the beautiful Heinzenberg mountain in the Swiss Canton of Graubünden. The family lived in modest circumstances in this small farming village. Martin’s father was a joiner and built stables, while his mother looked after the house and garden. When Martin reached school age, he sat together with all the other children of the village aged seven to twelve in the school in a single classroom and was therefore able to follow a variety of curriculum material, which suited his great thirst for knowledge. As was normal in mountainous regions of the day, the school year lasted only six months and during the rest of the time the children had to help on the land. Martin spent this time with his uncle, who was a farmer.
