Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) are a major public health issue in Pakistan. Prevention measures have led to a dramatic improvement in the quality of life and productivity. Reduction of IDD would contribute significantly
to the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals. The Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Aga
Khan University and UNICEF Sindh jointly conducted a cross-sectional household survey targeting three areas in Sindh Province to assess the extent of iodine deficiency in underfive children and women of reproductive age (WRA), and their current knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding IDD and iodized salt. Lessons learned from this survey will inform iodized salt social marketing projects in Pakistan.
