For nearly 25 years, the German Doctors Committee (“Aerzte fuer die dritte Welt”), an international medical assistance organization based in Frankfurt (Germany), has been working on long-term assistance projects on four continents. To date, our projects have annually reached several hundred thousand slum dwellers in the cities of Mana – gua (Nicaragua), Nairobi (Kenya), Kolkata (India), Dhaka and Chitta – gong (Bangla desh), and Manila (and rural areas of the Philippines) with primary health care services; these services have been delivered by over 2,000 volunteer doctors from Ger many under our organization’s aus pices. Micronutrient deficiencies have long been a focus of our interest in the broader context of primary health care in slums.
