Vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem causing morbidity and mortality among infants throughout much of developing world. It may occur at any age. The more severe forms of deficiency are associated with profound ocular complications that almost always occur in children between the ages of six months and five years. The ocular manifestations associated with vitamin A deficiency are due to lack of vitamin A associated with protein calorie malnutrition. In high percentage of cases, children with keratomalacia have a history of acute diarrhea, worm infestations, respiratory infections or measles.
