New Findings on Apo-Carotenoid Metabolites of β-Carotene

Recent studies have found that non-central β-carotene cleavage products, produced through the action of the eccentric cleavage enzyme β-carotene 9’,10’-dioxygenase (BCDO2) or nonenzymatically, can function as vitamin A antagonists, and may therefore block the essential actions of vitamin A within the body. The new findings regarding the metabolites of β-carotene provide deeper insight into the mechanisms of normal vitamin A metabolism and action, and may also explain the negative outcomes observed in the CARET and ATBC cancer trials, as well as vertical HIV transmission studies undertaken in Africa. These scientific advances suggest that new studies will be needed in order to evaluate the safety and efficacy of future β-carotene interventions aimed at optimizing health and preventing disease.
