Hills in KwaZulu-Natal during the 1990s. This home-garden project, which was aimed at the production and consumption of vitamin A-rich fruits and vegetables together with nutrition education, proved to be successful
in improving the vitamin A status of 2 to 5-year-old children. The home-garden approach can complement both fortification and supplementation programs and provides a sustainable means of achieving food and nutritional security. People in rural areas often have limited access to commercially available fortified foods. Rural areas will therefore benefit most from the inclusion of vitamin A-rich vegetables in gardening projects.
