Recent advances in vitamin A absorption and transport

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) remains a public health problem causing morbidity and mortality in infants throughout much of the world (1). To correct VAD, a large dose of preformed vitamin A (retinol) is administered (2). Although it has long been clear that this approach is an effective one for treating and preventing VAD, only
recently have the molecular processes and factors responsible for facilitating vitamin A absorption in the intestine and transport in the circulation begun to be understood fully at the molecular level. This review will focus on recent advances in our understanding of the molecular processes and biochemical factors that are responsible for the uptake of dietary vitamin A by the intestine and its transport in the blood.
