Thika is a low-income, urban town located approximately 40 miles northeast of Nairobi, Kenya. Nearly 50% of households in  Thika District are impoverished and HIV/AIDS aff ects nearly 34% of the population. As a result of infectious disease, undernutrition and poverty, it includes a large orphan population. Macheo Children’s Centre recognizes the disproportionate burden of disease and poverty in Thika and seeks to meet the needs of its community. Founded in 2005, Macheo is a nongovernmental organization whose vision is to “provide the children of today with a brighter fu ture.” It runs several childcentered projects, with core activities centered around a children’s home and an education program.
