Anemia is a major health concern in developing countries as well as in the developed world. It impairs growth and development, cognition and immune function, as well as school and work performance. Anemia affects more than two billion people world- wide, and has a negative impact on economic growth, particularly in low-income countries. Only about half of anemia is thought to be related to iron deficiency; other micro nutrient deficiencies such as vitamin A, vitamin C, B- vitamins, zinc and copper as well as infections and under nutrition also play a crucial role. Guidelines for supplementation and food fortification to address anemia usually focus on iron and folic acid, however. On this account, we feel that it is timely to highlight all contributing factors in a work- shop on Nutritional Anemia.
