The 14th Latin American Congress on Nutrition, the triennial gathering of the Latin American Society of Nutrition (abbreviated SLAN, in Spanish and Portuguese), was held at a seaside conference center in Florianopolis, Brazil, from November 12–16, 2006. It was attended by more than 1700 professionals and students, primarily from Latin America, but also from all across the globe and marked Brazil’s Prof. Helio Vannucchi’s end of tenure as SLAN president, having organized and presided over the Congress in previous years. Prof. Vannucchi inaugurated the event with an assembly on the evening of November 12, which featured greetings from Brazilian governmental authorities, orchestral music, and a discourse by Prof. Ricardo Uauy of Chile, current president of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences, on the topic: The challenge of the new epidemiological profile for Latin America. A personal tribute was paid to two of the past presidents of SLAN, Dr Jose Eduardo Dutra de Oliveira of Brazil and Dr Adolfo Chávez of Mexico.
