The Micronutrient Deficiency Information System (MDIS), a database for indicators of micronutrient malnutrition, was developed in 1992 in the Department of Nutrition for Health and Development (NHD) of the World Health Organization (WHO). Focusing on three micronutrient deficiencies of demonstrated public health importance, Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD), Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD), and Iron Deficiency/ Anemia (IDA), the MDIS is maintained through a collaboration between WHO headquarters and Regional Offices who liaise with the WHO Country Offices and the respective Ministries of Health. MDIS assesses the prevalence of disease as a primary function, but can also be used as a tool to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs in eliminating diseases since historical data remain available as new data are inputted. Thus, MDIS can track how successfully a country is progressing towards ts own national and international goals, in addition to assessing how the world is faring as a whole. The importance of sharing this valuable health information is recognized by WHO, and for this reason efforts are made to publish the data through the World Wide Web. The databases on anemia and iodine deficiency can be accessed at http://www3.who. int/whosis/micronutrient*. The vitamin A database will be available on the website soon.
