Goal: To determine the contribution of fortified sugar to the overall intake of vitamin A
Despite having sugar fortification mandated, ~ 40 – 50% of U5 children are vitamin A deficient in Zambia. At the same time, a recent and somewhat controversial publication suggested that preschool-aged children may actually have high vitamin A stores. The authors suggested that this finding was due to excessive intake of vitamin A from fortified sugar. However, the researchers did not measure sugar intake.
With Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health we evaluate the contribution of fortified sugar to vitamin A intakes and status among 255 lactating mothers and their infants in rural Zambia using cutting edge methods, digital tools and field-friendly portable diagnostics.
