Joining Forces for Last Mile Nutrition

Goal

Sight and Life engages in and supports public-private partnerships in order to chart a roadmap to achieve the ‘last-mile’ for nutrition through the implementation of innovative, market-based solutions with the power to significantly improve the food environments of nutritionally vulnerable populations across the globe.

Description

The ‘last mile’ can be understood as the the distance between where we are today, and where we aim to go for any given indicator. Low- and middle-income countries, face many complex challenges in reaching the last mile due to the nature of food environments, which are complex, dynamic and heavily influenced by the private sector. While the food industry is criticized for it’s negative impact on food environments, countless missed opportunities and damaging actions, its  power to influence the availability, accessibility and affordability of and demand for nutritious foods cannot be overlooked. The majority of food being sold in grocery stores across the world is acquired from markets in low- and middle-income countries, making it essential to collaborate with the private sector.

Joining Forces for Last-Mile Nutrition enables three partners – a think-tank, an NGO and a corporate – to pool resources and expertise with the aim of delivering innovative, market-based solutions for optimal nutrition, at scale. Each partner brings to the table an open mindset and a propensity for innovation, along with shared values, principles and goals. This creates an environment conducive to the development of innovative solutions at both global and national level that can be translated into community-level solutions delivered via local partners.

Within this partnership, we work to develop innovative nutrition solutions in the following three projects:

  • Africa Improved Foods factory in Kigali, Rwanda
  • Egg-citing—better and more eggs for Asia
  • Last Mile Entrepreneurship in Brazil
