About the project

Sight and Life is looking for a regulatory expert for its Phytase project. The broad objective is to bring phytase-enriched food products in Nigeria – the largest consumer market in Africa. Phytase, an enzyme, is an evidence-based solution that, when added to foods, can increase the absorption of calcium, zinc, iron, and other minerals in our body. In animal nutrition, it is also used to increase absorption of amino acids as well as energy.

The incorporation of phytase into human foods represents an innovative intervention that requires thorough regulatory evaluation to ensure safety, efficacy, and compliance with both global and national food standards. The regulatory expert will review and conduct a comprehensive regulatory assessment to facilitate the approval and adoption of phytase in food products in Nigeria. This work involves analyzing existing regulations, interviewing key stakeholders, identifying potential barriers to market entry, and developing strategies to align with Nigerian food regulatory authority’s requirements.

Deliverables

Evaluate the addition of phytase to selected products by reviewing the global and Nigerian regulatory framework and existing product registration. This will include:

  • Identification and assessment of applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines,
  • Verification of food companies’ compliance with Nigerian regulations,
  • Review of international standards (CODEX, WHO, FAO, etc.) on phytase addition to food products, and
  • Conducting a risk assessment for phytase-enriched food products.

Support the food companies with getting regulatory approvals for phytase-enriched food products. This will include:

  • Developing a roadmap ensuring compliance to minimize delays for launch,
  • Putting together documentation for registration of phytase-based products, and
