Malnutrition among women and children in LMICs is not improving at the rate we want, and in fact becoming worse in some regions. Many innovative and evidence-based nutrition commodities, such as MMS, MNP and LSFF, have shown to offer a solution, however, their coverage is inadequate.
 
If we are to make a real difference, nutrition commodities that are context-relevant need to be easily available as well as affordable. Sight and Life's Product Innovation in Nutrition project, supported by CIFF, is working to make this a reality.

What is at the core of Sight and Life?

Improved maternal nutrition is critical to creating a world of healthy women, children, and societies. Good nutrition sets off a ripple effect. It can dismantle inequity, poverty, and poor health. At every stage in the life-cycle, it can drive progress – helping to enable each person to reach their full potential. It supports physical and cognitive development, helps prevent a number of diseases – from spina bifida to diabetes – and saves lives. During pregnancy, the nutrition demands are greater – as are the consequence of not meeting them. It helps ensure a healthy pregnancy for mothers, limiting the risk of life-threatening complications. And for children, good nutrition during their mother’s pregnancy can be the difference between being born healthy and being born physically or mentally disadvantaged – or stillborn. Each year, more than 300,000 women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications. Approximately 20 million babies are born underweight, 23 million are born too small, and 15 million are born too soon. Nearly half (45 percent) of all under-five child deaths are attributable to poor nutrition. But this does not need to be the case. Improved maternal nutrition is one of the most significant ways to ensure that women have healthy pregnancies and their children are born healthy. We must reach women and girls with effective interventions to improve maternal nutrition that are ready to scale up now. Power for Mothers Highlights

Not only are food systems complex, but each is also unique to the geography and culture it is supposed to nourish. Building Healthy, Nutritious and Affordable Food Systems for Rwanda through Innovations is a workshop that looked to discover the intricacies and needs to build effective and efficient food systems in Rwanda. We aspire to develop a Food Systems Innovation Hub that will support a positive food system transformation. As a UN Food Systems Summit Independent Dialogue, the ideas and information from this workshop contributed to the upcoming Summit and further developed the Food Systems Innovation Hub concept in Rwanda. The event was moderated by Simon Winter of the Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture and featured: Presentations by Anna Lartey (University of Ghana), Dr Ndabamenye Telesphore (Technical Advisor, Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources – Rwanda), and Breda Gavin-Smith (Sight and Life). A dynamic conversation was led by Kalpana Beesabathuni (Sight and Life) with Namukolo Covic (IFPRI) and more on the importance of innovating affordable, tasty, nutritious foods and how the Food Systems Innovation Hub could support entrepreneurs. Maya Stewart (Lenzie Milling Company)along with Sight and Life team members hosted insightful breakout sessions on entrepreneurship and innovation, creating demand for nutritious foods, food safety, and advocacy and policy, and more.
