One in two preschool-aged children and two out of three women of reproductive age are micronutrient deficient. Various practical and innovative nutrition commodities have shown strong and moderate evidence to address maternal and child malnutrition. Some examples are multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS, MMP), low-cost protein, small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements, ready-to-use supplementary food, balanced-energy protein supplementation, and large-scale food fortification (LSFF). However, the coverage of these commodities is abysmally low.
There is an urgent need to make them more accessible, available, and affordable by improving their supply chain. The Product Innovations in Nutrition project by Sight and Life is implementing a viable, consumer and market-based approach to make MMS and LSFF with phytase accessible in Africa and Asia.
