SAL Rwanda, ABUSOL Partner to Launch Egg Hub to Improve Nutrition, Create Jobs and Strengthen Rwanda’s Poultry Value Chain

1 July 2026

Bugesera, Rwanda – June 29, 2026 – Sight and Life (SAL) Rwanda and Agribusiness Solutions Ltd (ABUSOL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the Egg Hub in Rwanda—an innovative private sector-led initiative designed to improve nutrition, strengthen the poultry value chain, create jobs, and support smallholder farmers in building sustainable and profitable poultry businesses.

Signed at ABUSOL’s headquarters in Mayange Sector, Bugesera District, the partnership brings together SAL’s expertise with ABUSOL’s experience in commercial poultry production to help smallholder farmers transition into profitable and sustainable egg production

Eggs are among the most affordable and nutrient-dense animal-source foods, providing high-quality protein and essential micronutrients that are critical for child growth and development. Yet many smallholder poultry farmers continue to face barriers, including limited access to quality birds, affordable feed, financing, technical support, and reliable markets. The Egg Hub model addresses these challenges by bringing together these essential services under one coordinated platform.

“This model developed by SAL has already shown strong results in countries such as Malawi and Ethiopia, where it has helped increase egg production and farmers income by more than three times” said Elvis Gakuba, Africa Director at SAL. “For us at SAL, the Egg Hub is about people, not just eggs, it is an investment in better nutrition, stronger livelihoods, job creation, and more resilient food systems. By working together with the government, the private sector, development partners and communities, we can create lasting opportunities for farmers, strengthen local economies, and ensure more families have access to nutritious food.”

The three-year pilot will initially be implemented in Bugesera and Ngoma districts, where one Egg Hub and a demonstration farm will support six farmer groups comprising 30 farmers. During the first year, the project will facilitate the distribution of 6,000 point-of-lay birds, alongside training, veterinary services, quality inputs, market linkages and financing facilitation. The initiative is expected to support the production of approximately 5,000 eggs per day while creating a foundation for farmer-led expansion through reinvestment and a revolving fund mechanism.

The initiative aligns with Rwanda’s national priorities to improve nutrition, strengthen agricultural commercialization, promote employment, and encourage private sector-led agricultural transformation.

“The Egg Hub reflects SAL Rwanda’s commitment to strengthening food systems in ways that improve both nutrition and livelihoods. Eggs are an affordable source of high-quality protein and essential nutrients, while poultry farming offers real income opportunities for smallholder farmers, especially women and youth. Through this model, we are supporting farmers to build more productive businesses while helping make nutritious foods more available to Rwandan families.” - Straton Habumugisha, Senior Manager – Food Systems at SAL Rwanda,

As the private sector partner, ABUSOL will provide quality point-of-lay pullets, technical assistance, farmer training and facilitate market linkages to help participating farmers increase productivity and build commercially viable poultry enterprises.

“Agribusiness Solutions (ABUSOL Ltd) is delighted to partner with SAL on the Egg Hub, a sustainable solution to improve nutrition and livelihoods by empowering smallholder farmers through quality point-of-lay pullet availability, technical assistance and market linkage facilitation. Together, we can help improve children’s nutrition while advancing the economic well-being of Rwandan communities through modern poultry farming,” said Jean Baptiste Musabyimana, Chief Executive Officer of ABUSOL Ltd.

The teams expressed gratitude to the Matt Freeman, Executive Director of Stronger Foundations for the generous support of the project through its philanthropic member.
