Sight and Life and MotherFood Partner to Advance Maternal Nutrition in Rwanda
13 March 2026
Partnership will expand access to Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation for pregnant women across Rwanda.
Kigali, Rwanda – March 13, 2026 — Sight and Life has announced a new partnership with MotherFood , a Canada-based social enterprise committed to combating maternal and child malnutrition, to support ongoing efforts to strengthen maternal nutrition in Rwanda. Together, the two organisations will work to expand access to Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) for pregnant women in Rwanda — a critical intervention in the fight against preventable maternal and newborn health outcomes.
Micronutrient deficiency during pregnancy remains a leading driver of maternal anaemia, low birth weight, and preventable child mortality across Africa. MMS, a daily supplement which provides 15 essential vitamins and minerals for pregnant women, has been shown to significantly improve birth outcomes and is increasingly recognised as an effective intervention by global health authorities. Rwanda's government has already recognised the potential. In January 2024, the Government of Rwanda, in collaboration with the Rwanda Biomedical Center and UNICEF, launched a national MMS programme in five districts, with the goal of replacing traditional iron-folic acid supplementation as the standard of antenatal care. This Sight and Life–MotherFood partnership directly accelerates that ambition, expanding community-level reach and strengthening the evidence base to support nationwide scale-up.
"Rwanda remains committed to strengthening maternal nutrition as a core pillar of maternal and newborn health. The expansion of Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation reflects our ambition to ensure that every pregnant woman receives the nutrients required for a healthy pregnancy. Rwanda stands ready to work with partners who share our vision to scale this effort and deliver lasting impact for mothers and children."
— Prof. Claude MUVUNYI MAMBO, Director General, Rwanda Biomedical Centre
"Rwanda has made remarkable strides in improving maternal health, but micronutrient deficiency continues to undermine the health of mothers and their children. This partnership with MotherFood gives us the momentum to go further, reaching more women in more communities with the nutrition they need to thrive during and beyond pregnancy. We are proud to have a partner that understands both the urgency and the complexity of this work."
— Elvis Gakuba, Africa Director, Sight and Life
This partnership reflects a shared commitment to evidence-based, sustainable nutrition solutions that reach the women who need them most. Through the collaboration, Sight and Life will leverage MotherFood's support to strengthen MMS distribution, deepen community-level engagement, and generate evidence that can inform national and regional nutrition policy.
"MotherFood is proud to partner with Sight and Life to provide essential maternal nutritional supplements in Rwanda. Their impactful work aligns perfectly with our mission to combat maternal and child malnutrition and support healthy pregnancies through sustainable, local solutions."
— Eric Kimmel, Partner, MotherFood
The partnership also opens the door to future collaboration on community engagement, field documentation, and the broader visibility of MMS as a cornerstone of maternal care across Africa. Both organisations are committed to ensuring this work is visible, evidence-led, and scalable.
